book series thoughts (KOTLC) & blog update

Book Series Thoughts (KOTLC)

Keeper of The Lost Cities Series by Shannon Messenger was a book series that I did not touch at all. Most of my fellow bookworm friends recommended this series, but for some reason I did not believe them. Well, I believe that there are 3 main reasons to why I did not try to read the books even after knowing that the series appealed strongly to readers.

1st reason: I was never a big fan of fantasy; I found fantasy weird and unrealistic. As a pretty realistic person *cough*, I preferred reading books that talked about real life issues or even issues that I could relate to.

2nd reason: I am a very picky reader. Ever since young, many books did not suit my taste at all. When I was still in elementary school, my mom often chose books for me to read, however, I rarely enjoyed majority of them. Of course, there are some books in which I am thankful that I got exposed to.

3rd reason: I hardly trusted people when it came to likes and dislikes. In this case, the people were the internet and my friends.

One fine day, surprisingly, I decided to check the 1st book of the series out. I realized that MANY of my friends recommended this series, so why not? I managed to get ahold of the e-book, and soon delved into the world of magic. From the previous sentence, you can probably tell that I enjoyed the 1st book. No wait, I did not just enjoy the book, I loved it! Being a pro at procrastinating unfortunately, I got all of the e-books that were available and read it all in just a span of 1-2 weeks. At that time, I started telling about this series to my sister. As a lover of fantasy herself, she read the books too. Together, we raced through the books and fought to be the first to finish the series. (THERE ARE STILL MORE BOOKS COMING OUT BTW.) No doubt, as I procrastinated much more than her, I finished first (; Of course, that came with cons too, I had to struggle to stop from spilling what happens in the end!

Shannon Messenger, this dear series of yours changed my mindset about fantasy. Now, I'm going to share with all of you just why I love this series so much, and how it changed my mind about fantasy.

1st reason: It was catchy.

2nd reason: It contained less unreal stuff than other fantasy books. The main ideas that happened in the story were pretty much realistic.

3rd reason: I loved the details in the story and how they were very similar to books I had read before.

What is the main theme of Keeper of The Lost Cities Series? Summary by Scattered Books Bookstore:

"Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster is an outcast in her community. Being extremely smart and clever, her peers often label her as a know-it-all and exclude her from finding her place. Sophie also has a secret, she can read minds and she doesn’t know why. One day, a mysterious boy named Fitz reveals himself to her, and he, too, can read minds. Fitz brings Sophie to the Elvish world, and she realizes that she actually does have a place where she belongs. However, secrets about why she was hidden in the human world are buried deep inside her memory; secrets that some people would kill for."

Best things about the series:

1st thing: There are a lot of plot twists that really keep me on my toes. I get so surprised in the book when the plot twists happen.

2nd thing: I love that each character is developed pretty well done. From just after reading a few books from the series, I can clearly differentiate the character traits of each and every main character.

3rd thing: There is a lot of suspense. Although suspense sucks when there is a cliff-hanger at the end of a book, suspense is really important in developing the plot. There are times where it takes 1 or 2 books before something is revealed. I found that really interesting

4th thing: The books are very clean. There are no curse words, and there is almost no way to learn wrong stuff from them.

5th thing: Lastly, it is very different from other fantasy books where the things that happen are always the same. However, in this series, we discover new things with each character most of the time!

Not-so-good things about the series:

1st thing: There are certain things where it is unnecessary. For example, characters that do not need to be there all the time. As KOTLC is a book series, it is bound to have many characters as time goes on, however, I believe that there should be a limit.

2nd thing: Sophie's character changes far too much. Sometimes she's a really nice girl, at times she's stuck-up and not fun to be with at all. Although I understand that this is a normal thing in real life, this does not really show what Sophie's character is. Her friends are also way too understanding.

Haha, I don't really have a lot of bad things to say about this series because I LOVE IT. But, I do understand that if you've read this series before, your opinions might differ from mine!

All in all, I recommend it 100% so go get this book right now. Just kidding, no wait, GO GET IT. You can learn more about Shannon Messenger and KOTLC here.
